Centered in the heart of the Columbia Valley and roughly 50 miles north of Red Mountain and the Yakima Valley sits the Wahluke Slope AVA, a yet to be discovered but dynamic winegrowing region that is producing some of the most exciting wines the state of Washington has to offer.
Leading the way is Luke wines, a play off the word ‘Wahluke’ meaning watering hole. It’s a nod to the indigenous folks who have been tending to the land for generations.
The 2019 Luke Merlot reveals the hallmark of great Washington merlot – dark red fruits, rounded tannins, and an opulent, smooth finish. Fresh flavors of plum, cherry, and blackberry dominate the mid palate while earthy flavors of tobacco, cedar, and clove marry the spices of vanilla and mocha to extend the wine’s long lingering finish. This baby is a true BDX blend, comprised of 85% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Malbec.

“Weinbau fruit makes up the backbone of this wine. The aromas pull you into the glass, with notes of blue plum, raspberry, vanilla, graphite and coffee. The palate is full feeling, with lush fruit flavors and sneaky structure behind them. There’s a pleasing lick of acidity that ups the interest. It’s a big mouthful of a wine that overdelivers. Decant to see it at its best.”

Fresh herbs, grilled plums, blackcurrants and tar on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with silky tannins. Fresh on the palate, with a core of black fruit and pleasant mineral character. Drink now.

The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino from Aleramici hits all the right notes. It has a nice medium weight to it with easy drinking cherry, creme de cassis and purple fruits. It’s multi-dimensional with waves of some dark plum and blackberry with more sage and spice components as well that compliment it perfectly.

“Quietly powerful, dense with alluring oak spices and late-picked fruit flavors, this full-bodied, velvet-textured Cabernet-dominant blend is generous and inviting to drink, but also balanced and structured for the long haul. Concentrated, deep and layered, it is meant for drinking with appreciative friends or family in the future. Best from 2027–2040.”
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
Winemaker Patrick Brunet’s tiny Domaine Robert estate consists of 50-60 year old vines, deeply rooted in the granitic soils of Fleurie. What I love about him is that every vintage brings something new but it consistently stays excellent. For his 2022 cuvee, Patrick produced a concentrated, structured Beaujolais that’s roaring out of the gates but with the bones to improve in the bottle over the next decade. This is always a fantastic bottle to have around.
