Le Machioche is a great little winery that was started by the Mazzocchi Family in the 1980’s. The winery takes its name from the “macioca”, that in the Sienese dialect indicates the root of the strawberry tree and that constitutes the woods that embrace the Estate. The winery covers a total area of about 6 hectares of which three are classified as Brunello. The vineyard is located at an altitude of about 450 meters above sea level at a key SW facing slope, and at this elevation, there’s a good supply of clay, but still very rich in skeleton due to the presence of galestro rocks.
After a lucky shot in the dark, I was able to secure exactly 18 bottles of this outrageously rare item — a quantity too small to email or even text out. You can find almost nothing from the fantastic 95-point rated 2007 vintage in Montalcino anymore. But if you have any Brunello bottles in your cellar and you’ve opened any in the past couple of years, you can attest that they are lights out right now.
These were found in the back of the winery’s cellar in perfect condition. Barely any made it stateside originally, I can find only one person with it online now (for $139/bottle). Needless to say, this is a fantastic deal on a wine that is in the midst of its drinking prime.

Very ripe style, verging on jammy, with lots berry and dried strawberry. Full body, round, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Needs at least three to four years to soften.

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Le Macioche is quite pretty in this vintage. Sweet floral notes meld into pine, mint and dried cherries in this feminine, gracious Brunello. The 2007 from Le Macioche is all about understatement and class. It is one of the more reserved wines of the vintage, and will appeal to readers who appreciate the subtle side of Brunello. The estate’s Brunello spent 44 months in cask. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.

“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
