Corzano e Paterno, an organic estate just 20 minutes from Florence, is one of my favorites for honest, traditional Chianti and Sangiovese/Cabernet blends like Corzanello. Winemaker, Joschi Goldschmidt and his wife Toni actually run two businesses off of their 300 or so acres in Tuscan paradise. The first is a small fromagerie, making several different types of sheep cheeses (their cousin Tylo tends 700 Sardian sheep on half the property). Sadly, the restaurants of Florence take 100% of the production. I’m working on figuring out a way to smuggle some here although the chance of it getting past the kitchen of our house is not likely.
The other business is wine, where Joschi makes pure Sangiovese based wines, with a finesse like Pinot Noir balanced by a touch of earthy rusticity. They farm both sides organically, no chemicals for over 30 years. It’s an absolute oasis in the rolling hills of Chianti, a must visit if you go to Tuscany. The Corzanello 2006 is a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. It has just incredible fruit and is vibrant enough to stand up to any outdoor cuisine. This is a rare one from a long time ago that should still be drinking beautifully for the 3-5 years.

The beauty of Italian house reds are that they can pair with anything. The family drinks it with pizza, you should too!

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.

Domaine Jaume Vinsobres Altitude 420 is an old-vine Grenache-Syrah blend from vineyards planted in Les Collines at some of the highest points in the Rhône. The Jaumes have farmed these dizzying elevations at their estate in Vinsobres for 100+ years. The 2020 is one of his best yet, pristine and fresh, a bowl full of berried-up fruit yet with the tension and length that belies its humble price. Incredible bang for the buck, tailor-made for anyone’s house red, and a slam dunk for any kind of meat on the bone.
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
