This is a really cool estate run by Milla Handley. She worked for legendary winemakers, Richard Arrowood and Jed Steele before setting out on her own in Anderson Valley in 1978. At the time, Anderson Valley was just discovering its potential. She established Handley Cellars in 1982 and it became the leader in the region in sustainable farming and organic practices.
Her Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are two of the better expressions coming out of Anderson Valley today and a must-try if you’re unfamiliar with the winery. Today Milla and her daughter Lulu run operations. This is a juicy, full-bodied Chardonnay with pristine fruit, a little bit of that buttery richness but good firm acid to keep everything in balance and harmony.

“A tasty mix of crisp apple and warm butter and vanilla flavors highlight this medium-bodied and silky textured wine from one of Anderson Valley’s well-established producers. Pippin apple and lemon notes complement the buttery richness.”

Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
It’s an electric white Burgundy, with a limestone-laced aromatic profile of green apple, pear and hazelnut. Refined and high-toned, the pure, delicious fruit that is a hallmark of this terrific vintage, finishes long and fresh, with a mile-long mineral streak.
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
Gold Medal (Best in Show), 2023 Mundus Vini International Tasting
The area has also been isolated from the rest of Spain for generations, which has kept the wine prices far lower than wines of this quality would be anywhere else in the world. That’s why, despite having the Torres family name on the bottle and the consistent huge press (including the Gold Medal & Best in Show at the 2023 Mundus Vini International Wine Awards in Germany), these wines can still be scooped up for under $20/bottle. It’s like the Sancerre pricing of yesteryear.
