Now representing the third generation at the estate, Gianni Doglia is one of the leading growers in the region of Monferrato. Every time I open a bottle of wine from Gianni Doglia, I get the feeling we have a budding rock star of winegrower on our hands. His wines absolutely burst with fruit. They are juicy, long on the palate and deliver incredible bang for the buck. His latest release is a tank-fermented Nebbiolo.
Finding great value in Nebbiolo, the grape variety of Barolo and Barbaresco, is a really tough go. Like all great Tuesday night wines, to find value, you have to get off the beaten path. The hills of Asti, where I found Gianni pruning in the spring of 2015 at 9:00 at night, definitely qualifies.
The soil is special in Asti, sandy and laden with limestone, perfect for creating pure wines with plenty of finesse. The newly released 2020 Nebbiolo Monferrato is roaring out of the gates and ready to go. It’s dark purple to its core, while remaining bright and wonderfully aromatic. Drink it through the end of summer into early fall with grilled meat, salmon or a piping hot pizza or just by itself, it’s a delicious glass of wine all by itself.

It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.
In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.

We are one of the very few folks who have Wine Spectator’s #3 Wine of the Year. This is definitely not one to miss. The 2016 vintage showcases this prized vineyard in all its glory; notes of wild black fruit, thyme, mint, eucalyptus, and bay are lifted and enjoyed with the polished tannin and mouthwatering freshness of this wine. Regarded as one of the best vintages in the last few decades, the 2016 Martha’s Vineyard has been aged to perfection for immediate enjoyment at release and will continue to reward for the next 20+ years.
