Domaine de Pouy has been one of France’s best white wine producers for decades. Robert Parker, Jr. himself spent years gushing over the wines, calling it “always one of his favorite inexpensive dry whites”, “One of America’s finest white wine values” and that the “exuberant, super-aromatic white was one of the best in Cotes de Gascogne, a region known for churning out some of the most interesting and affordable wines anywhere in the world.
The 2019 Domaine de Pouy Cotes de Gascogne is an electric white wine value that owes much of its energy and freshness to its cold soaks on the skins during harvest and never touching oak in the aging process. That leaves a pent up white wine loaded with aromatics that jumps out of the bottle with green apple, melon and citrus with a racy finish.
Made primarily from Ugni Blanc, one of the most planted varietals in the world and an essential ingredient in Cognac. For today’s purposes, it’s a backbone to one of the more fun wines to sip by the pool. Don’t serve it too cold though! It’s easily one of the most fun wines to sniff as well!

2022 was an absolutely perfect vintage in this respect and unfortunately, I think it will be one of the last, if not THE last. As winegrower Jean-Marc Brocard reported to Decanter: “When we taste the wines, we feel that the balance between acidity and ripeness is very good. It’s a classic style of Chablis. In the end, even after such a heat during summertime, we stay in a cool year reference.” He also alluded to the ageability of the vintage, saying “Let’s give them time, we must let nature do its work.”
The newly released Riesling Feinherb 2021 is a lively, juicy wine with an elegant bouquet of minerals, wet stone and ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine’s slight off-dry component is beautifully balanced by the steely acidity typical of the Mosel. Because this is freshly released, the fruit is vibrant and succulent and it comes in somewhere between off-dry and semi-sweet. It’s a great example of Riesling, especially at the price.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
