Founded in 1975 by Carole & Tom Dehlinger, Dehlinger winery is still family owned and operated by their two daughters – Eva Dehlinger & Carmen. The estate is primarily composed of 20+ year old vines that are dry-farmed with a focus on sustainability, producing roughly 3,000cs of Estate Chardonnay & Pinot Noir annually and has been a consistent top player in the Russian River Valley for about two decades now.
Always a critic darling, this is what Antonio Galloni and Vinous had to say about the latest set of releases, “Eva Dehlinger presented a gorgeous set of 2019s. Over the last few years Dehlinger has added an extra dimension of finesse to the wines, and that really comes through in this tasting. These new releases are fabulous.” They’re not even the ones who went gangbusters– Wine Enthusiast went to town on Eva’s latest releases, making them all but impossible to get a hold of…unless you know someone ;).
Hoping to make a splash with the Nicholas Wines crowd on the East Coast, they’ve offered up their three highest rated wines – though there’s not much to go around. The four-pack sampler gives you a chance to try them all. Each four pack includes:
(2 btls) Dehlinger Estate Unfiltered Chardonnay 2019 (96 Pts, WE)
(1 btl) Dehlinger Estate Pinot Noir Goldridge Vineyard 2019 (96 Pts, WE)
(1 btl) Dehlinger Estate Pinot Noir Altamont Vineyard 2018 (97 Pts, WE – 94 Pts, WS)

“Delicious, fresh, and savoury, this juicy Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast has violet and smoky flint aromatics buoyed by fresh red berries and a kiss of fresh mint. The palate is reflective, with flinty minerality coming to the fore. Pine sap, notes of fresh evergreen and lovely red fruits, clove and white peppery spice to finish.”

Sonoma Coast faired better than virtually every other California AVA in a vintage that saw extreme heat spikes. The coast and its high-altitude made for some gorgeous, aromatic and concentrated wines. Both of these are delicious right out of the gate. The Chardonnay is tightly wound, with bright lemon and granny smith apple set upon a creamy structure. The Pinot is equally tight with bright ripe strawberry, bing cherry, and a bit of spice.
Each mixed six-pack includes 3 btls each of the following:
-2022 Flowers Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast
-2022 Flowers Chardonnay Sonoma Coast
At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.
