With vineyard plantings as early as 1540, Chateau La Mission Haut Brion has deep roots in the Pessac-Leognan subregion of Bordeaux. In the 1959 Graves Classification, it was given a Cru designate, the 2nd highest to First Growths.
The chateau is situated right next to their 1st growth neighbor, Chateau Haut Brion although both Chateaus have been owned by the Dillon Family since 1983. Each vintage, the two chateaus battle for bragging rights. Although Chateau Haut Brion wines are certified First Growths and fetch upwards of $1,000/btl, it is not uncommon to see Chateau La Mission’s wines scored higher in some vintages, having earned a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate in six different vintages.
The 1996 is a Cabernet/Merlot Blend that has been perfectly cellared and stored since Day 1 and has remained in my private cellar stash for a long time now. It’s drinking great right now, with wonderful silky smooth, well-integrated tannins, a full-bodied slightly chewy mouthfeel and a really pleasantly, lengthy finish.

It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.
90 Points, James Suckling
Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
