Giscours is a beautiful and sprawling property with a great view in the world-famous Margaux appellation. It’s tucked away slightly from Cantenac, with an enormous chateau that makes the property look like royalty. To boot, it’s got grandiose ballrooms, acres and acres of wild animals roaming the fields, and a staff of about a thousand who are ready to give you a white glove welcoming.
Chateau Giscours is officially a Third Growth, but you could easily make an argument that they’ve been hitting above their weight since the turn of the century. And while Bordeaux has gotten four-figures pricey these days, a striking 2019 with a plethora of HUGE scores that can be had for under $100 seems like a needle in a haystack in a sea of big fish.
The 2019 vintage is as good as any at this great estate and represents the sixth straight vintage the winery received at least a 96-point review. The 2019 Giscours is a gem. It’s big and powerful but also rich with structure and finesse. The structure, freshness, and density of the Cabernet Sauvignon is palpable and helps this one deliver all the goods.

A ripe and layered red with lots of currant and chocolate character, as well as some walnut and cocoa powder. Crushed stones, too. It’s full and layered with round tannins and a juicy and plush texture. Crushed velvet that turns to silk. Very cool and long. Plenty going on here. Give it three to four years to come together. But will age beautifully for years to come. A blend of 65% cabernet sauvignon and 35% merlot.

Quite simply Giscours is magnificent in 2019 and also one of the rising stars of Margaux today. Pliant, supple and creamy the 2019 races out of the glass with striking dimension. Ripe red cherry red plum blood orange spice and new leather all flesh out in a radiant finessed Giscours that hits all the right notes. The 2019 is fabulous – that’s all there is to it. Tasted two times. My tasting with General Manager Alexander Van Beek and Estate Manager Lorenzo Pasquini was one of the highlights of several weeks of the Zoom calls all of us will remember from this very particular campaign. According to Van Beek and Pasquini 2019 was one of the longest harvests on record. The Merlot was picked early to preserve freshness while the Cabernet needed several additional weeks to achieve full physiological ripeness. Cuvaisons were long 35 days on average but pumpovers were stopped earlier in order to avoid overextraction. This new approach along with the input of super-talented consulting oenologist Thomas Duclos yielded two superb 2019s that continue Giscours’ ascendency in Margaux and Bordeaux.

Gorgeous floral aromatics, so perfumed and pretty, really leaping out the glass with an amazingly vibrant pink/purple colour too. Such an excellent delivery of flavour on the palate, you have shiny, bright fruit and well-expressed terroir with smooth and supportive tannins. It shows the heat of the vintage in the density and deep core of spice-edged red and black fruit but also has a juicy, bright acidity that underpins the fruit and keeps things refreshing. Full of elegance, precision and confidence – all the elements in harmony with consistency and persistence. A wonderful wine.

The 2019 Giscours has turned out very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cherries, burning embers, lilac and violets framed by a discreet patina of new oak. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it’s polished and perfumed, with a velvety, seamless profile and bright animating acids, concluding with a long, resonant finish. Alexandre Van Beek and his team are taking this estate to heights it hasn’t hit since the 1970s, and this is another of the great bargains of the 2019 en primeur campaign.
This one comes from very old vines in eight different lieux-dits, with the largest portion coming from Le Fourneau. Harvest is all by hand, and this wine sees 18 months in barrels with only 10% new oak. Clement (rightfully) believes that keeping the oak primarily neutral here brings out the most authentic and intense expression of his Pinot Noirs. Take a sip or two of this and you will know exactly what I mean.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.
