This one will be one of those ‘I knew them when’ wines that you can brag to your friends how little you paid when you were into them long before all the hype. It also happens to be a Right Bank stunner. So despite the modest price tag for a St. Emilion, I’m giving a nod and wink to all my wine collector and investor friends, in addition to those of us who just want outstanding wines for everyday enjoyment.
Though one can’t really say that Château Boutisse is totally off the radar. This 2018 offering already has four 93+ scores from the top critics in the game, but there’s a bit of news that hasn’t yet hit the mainstream that is likely to knock the cover off the ball.
The transformation that began in 1996 when the Milhade family purchased the estate has been nothing short of miraculous and has just culminated in the estate’s promotion to Grand Cru status starting with the 2022 vintage.
The process isn’t an easy one and involves analysis of the previous 20 vintages for quality, consistency, and superiority. Of course, the 2022 vintage is still on the horizon for release so many ordinary collectors are not yet aware but the anticipated effect on pricing can be as high as a 300% lift!

94 Points, James Suckling
Aromas of currants, blackberries, black cherries and fresh flowers follow through to a full body with super integrated, polished tannins and an intense mineral and salty character at the end. Such beauty.
93 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Boutisse comes out of the glass with exuberant notes of baked black plums, boysenberries and Morello cherries, plus suggestions of rose hip tea, fragrant soil, cinnamon stick and star anise. The full-bodied palate is rich and oh-so-plush, featuring a fantastic backbone of freshness and loads of spicy sparks to complement the black and red berry preserves, finishing long and mineral tinged. Beautiful.”
93 Points, Vinous
“The 2018 Boutisse is every bit as compelling as it was en primeur. Racy red berry fruit, mint, rose petal, mocha and blood orange lend brightness and energy. Medium in body and pliant, with refined tannins, the 2018 hits all the right notes. This is such a racy, finessed Saint-Emilion. It will drink well with minimal cellaring.”
93 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
Coming from the upper limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion and largely Merlot, the 2018 Château Boutisse reveals a deep ruby/plum hue as well as a rich, full-bodied, decadent style that’s already a joy to drink. Mulled black cherries, licorice, chocolate, graphite, and chocolaty minerality all define the nose, and it has building yet ripe tannins, a great mid-palate, and one heck of a lengthy finish. It’s every bit as good as the 2016, if not better. Readers looking for a gem of a Saint-Emilion that will deliver the goods over the coming 10-15 years won’t regret buying this.

It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.
90 Points, Wine Spectator
Domaine Jaume Vinsobres Altitude 420 is an old-vine Grenache-Syrah blend from vineyards planted in Les Collines at some of the highest points in the Rhône. The Jaumes have farmed these dizzying elevations at their estate in Vinsobres for 100+ years. The 2020 is one of his best yet, pristine and fresh, a bowl full of berried-up fruit yet with the tension and length that belies its humble price. Incredible bang for the buck, tailor-made for anyone’s house red, and a slam dunk for any kind of meat on the bone.
At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
