Right from the jump, critics jumped all over the 2016 vintage, declaring it a classic with some even calling it the ‘second coming’ of great Bordeaux.
James Suckling agreed, but took it even further “The wines have a classicism that reminds me of the great wines of the 1980s, but they have much more precision and clarity…”
Wine Enthusiast asked if it was a perfect vintage and added: “What makes the 2016 vintage so special is the quality across the Bordeaux hierarchy. The same character found in the most complex wines is also apparent in the simpler options. They all offer bottlings with rich, ripe fruit and a tannic structure that promises longevity.”
One Bordeaux appellation that seemed to excel even more than others in Bordeaux’s historic vintage, was in the tiny Left Bank appellation of Haut Medoc. With quality particularly exceptional, Decanter Magazine declared the Cru designate bottles, some of the best ever produced.
One of those Cru bottles of mention came from the former estate of Champagne Louis Roederer and Chateau Pichon Longeuville, Chateau Bernadotte, where their 2016 vintage knocked the socks off James Suckling. The Chateau, named after the man Napoleon once appointed King of Sweden shares a long and storied history in the region. But in the 2016 vintage, Suckling’s rave 93-point review was his highest ever for the Chateau since he began reviewing their wines in 2002.

This has aromas of boysenberries and dark berries with a wealth of bracken and gently tarry aromas, too. The palate has a fresh, fleshy and quite concentrated feel with fine tannins that hold the finish long. A blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. Try from 2023.

The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
The secret to Philippe’s tightly wound, complex Pinot Noir is a combo of ancient vines, natural farming techniques, and low yields. The wines are built to age, with incredible tension and length. And the secret to me securing his other-wordly 2017 old-vine Gevry-Chambertin can be chalked up to a great relationship and over a decade supporting superior Burgundian winemaking. The wine is scary good. The nose is wild, filled with spiced dark raspberries, red flowers, and baking spices. The palate is elegant and racy, with a dynamic tension that runs right through its minute-long finish. This is a high-toned, wound-up Pinot, that is starting to hit its prime and is really turning out to be a ‘must-have’ for true Burgundy lovers.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator

“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
