Very few wineries have anywhere near as rich a history in California. Famous winemakers from Dave Ramey to Bill Knuttel have led the winemaking at Chalk Hill, followed by Courtney Foley and now the extremely formidable Michael Beaulac (formerly with Merry Edwards, St. Supery and Pine Ridge). But even amongst the titans that came before him, it seems Beaulac is poised to bring the famous winery to even new heights.
Just last year, they saw their Sonoma Coast Chardonnay on Wine Spectator’s annual Top 100 list for wines of the year – an incredible honor especially given the modest price tag, but it’s probably a sign of what’s to come. The last 10-15 years has been non-stop experimenting with different chardonnay clones, as well as vineyard transformations to get to this point. And they’ve got all the resources in the world to be great.
With an insane 1300-acre property with 300 planted acres at their disposal as well as wilderness areas, and a culinary garden, Chalk Hill has become as much a destination as they have a winemaking juggernaut.
But one wine that will never be rated, nor see a top 100 list is the one we have today. That’s not a bad thing – it’s just their ‘secret Chardonnay.’ It’s never released to the general public or retail, only a few hundred cases are made each year to service the restaurant industry. But luckily for us, I’ve got a restaurant.

One of the best places to look for great Tuesday nighters are the sandy, limestone-laden hills of Asti. And within Asti, there is no white wine calling card that holds a candle to Moscato. Here it is king. Gianni Doglia naturally farms a tiny estate in the picturesque hamlet of Castagnole Lanze. His Moscato is the product of old vines, vinfied without oak to preserve its incredible fruit. This is serious, high-quality and hand-harvested Moscat, that oozes with sweet tropical fruits and a hint of minerality that stays on your tongue with each sip. This is also the perfect wine for anyone searching for a low alcohol option as well.
It’s an electric white Burgundy, with a limestone-laced aromatic profile of green apple, pear and hazelnut. Refined and high-toned, the pure, delicious fruit that is a hallmark of this terrific vintage, finishes long and fresh, with a mile-long mineral streak.
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
The 2016 vintage in Napa was nearly perfect for winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val). With ideal weather all throughout harvest, he crafted the Faustini Money Road Chardonnay off the famous vineyard located in the coveted Oakville AVA. The picturesque vineyard off Oakville Crossroad is platinum rated, known for its ideal combination of soil & climate and the big A list names that routinely source fruit. Kian’s Money Road Chard is still youthful despite having a few years of age, probably as a result of its 18 months of slumber in 1/4 new Oak.
