Each and every year we feature the inimitable wines of Castello di Volpaia. Even so, as the scores explode our allotment erodes. Last November, we snuck out 20 cases of Wine Spectator’s highest rated Chianti Classico in the history of the publication – Castello di Volpaia’s 2016 – on a sleepy afternoon.
But Volpaia’s spot amongst the elite is secured with far more than just a Chianti Classico, rather a full portfolio of different varietals priced from low to high. One wine you should definitely not sleep on from the winery, is their play at the ultimate Super Tuscan bargain of the year. A predominantly Sangiovese blend that also features Cabernet, the “Citto” is the winery’s play at Bordeaux’s second wines. Showcasing the youthful vibrancy, this wine was made in 100% stainless steal, making it the perfect wine to drink it while it’s fresh, silky and oh so juicy.

Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!

In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
