The name Cakebread reverberates throughout the wine world whenever it’s mentioned. It’s not only one of America’s most popular wines, it’s one of the most famous brands in the world, led by their world class Cabernet production.
I have previously been able to score Cakebread Chard, but this is the first time I got the flagship wine under the Cakebread name. It’s ridiculously allocated with my source only getting six cases to sell a year! I got 48 of those 72 bottles to offer up today.. Don’t wait around….
The history of Cakebread is a who’s who of some of America’s important wine pioneers. Jack Cakebread started it all. Robert Mondavi was the original enologist with Larry Wara as his consultant, The pair had to make the wine at neighbor Keenan winery while they were waiting for their world class winery to be designed and built by William Turnbull.
Over the decades, amazingly, the quality of the wines never faded, they only improved. It’s part of what makes this winery so special. In my last twenty years in the restaurant industry, Cakebread Cellars has never left the Top 10 most popular restaurant brands. The reason is really simple: the wines always elate their customers.

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
WS #4 2019 Wine of the Year, 96 Points, Wine Spectator
2016 was an incredibly special year in Napa Valley. It was essentially the 5th straight vintage of near perfect-conditions and a lot of the big boys produced some of their biggest, most elegant Cabernets to date. Groth’s was still one of the standouts in any group, a deeply concentrated, weighty Cab with sappy, juicy fruit and a carefully intertwined tannic structure. Absolutely gorgeous.
It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.
This one comes from very old vines in eight different lieux-dits, with the largest portion coming from Le Fourneau. Harvest is all by hand, and this wine sees 18 months in barrels with only 10% new oak. Clement (rightfully) believes that keeping the oak primarily neutral here brings out the most authentic and intense expression of his Pinot Noirs. Take a sip or two of this and you will know exactly what I mean.
