As the largest family-owned wine producer in all of Piedmont, they have it all. Unsophisticated value quaffers, some pretty nice mid-tier wines, and some single vineyard Barolos (Brunate, Bussia Vigneto, Briccolina) that will turn your head and empty your wallet.
This one was excellent and from the 2016 vintage too which is turning out to be one of my favorites in recent memory. As Antonio Galloni described it: “a vintage full of truly spectacular, breathtaking wines that captures all the pedigree that Nebbiolo and Barolo are capable of.”
“Alright, I’ll bite. How much is it?” As soon as I heard the price, I bought every remaining case in the country which is why we have the best price in the country by a country mile.
Open this one a good deal before you plan to serve and let it get some air. The nose is very pretty with cherry, cassis and dried currant. Red fruits on the palate with nuanced dash of cigar smoke, wild berry preserves, and tobacco.

92 Points, James Suckling
This is a solid Barolo with strawberry, meat, walnut and tar aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied with rich fruit and tannins. Muscular, yet there’s elegance and polish to it at the same time. Drink after 2021.
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
The Beni di Batasiolo 2016 Barolo shows pretty brightness with an easy, near-term personality. The bouquet is redolent of red cherry, cassis and dried currant. The wine presents a classic Nebbiolo profile with wild berry fruit, camphor ash and pretty highlights of cured tobacco and rust. In the mouth, it offers mild intensity over a mid-weight palate.

The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
90-92 Pts, Parker’s Wine Advocate – 91 Pts (Editors’ Choice), Wine Enthusiast – 91 Pts, Decanter
The wines get consistent high praise but 2018 is truly something special. 90-92 from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. 91 points and an Editor’s Choice designation from Wine Enthusiast. 91 more from Decanter who provides “There is so much to enjoy in the smaller appellations this year. Drinking Window 2022 – 2031” and another 90 point score from James Suckling. This is a home run value – especially for the price.
