This wine is a product of the very special partnership between Baron de Rothschild and Nicolas Catena Zapata, godfather of Argentinian wines and the man wine writer Jancis Robinson credits for, “Putting Argentina on the Map”. Two men of absolutely enormous stature in the industry.
With a pretty much bottomless budget, the two found the perfect spot in the Southwest of Mendoza in Valle de Uco where the truest expression of Malbec and Cabernet could be crafted. Right out of the gate, the two were feeling their oats. 92 points from James Suckling who says this is the year to start to drink it, and 90 more from Vinous who called this one, “a big but nuanced Red”
Two of the greatest wine pioneers from two different hemispheres join forces to make a delicious, Bordeaux style Malbec. This is always going to be the definition of a “No-Brainer”.

Blackberries, dark spices and cloves. A hint of iodine, too. Ripe blackberries on the palate with a broad, dense tannin frame. A little richer and more generous than the 2021, with more black fruit than blue fruit, but less taut and linear on the palate. Starting to open up now. Oak-free. Drink from 2023

The 2020 Malbec Aruma comes from different vineyards in the Uco Valley, Mendoza and spent a year in fine lees. This vintage delivers remarkably intense, fruity notes of candied plum, violets and a pure, alluring bed of herbs. The juice of the region combines with the 2020 climate to energize a palate of potent but balanced alcohol. This is a big but nuanced red.

With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator

“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
