Luckily, our good friend Diego Bolognani did us one last giant favor before he stepped away from winemaking. In giving me the bad news he was done, I think he could sense on the phone that I was a little worried. “But I do have a recommendation for you”, he said. Oh man was I happy to hear that.
He got excited as he told me all about this outstanding producer Zanotelli in Trentino. All of his winemaking friends know and love their wines, he explained. And here’s the part that blew me away– they even have a pretty significant advantage over the master himself: all their grapes are estate grown, unlike Diego who for years had to contract out for his grapes!
Of course, I was half expecting that with all the good news ,some bad news would follow. Estate fruit, Diego himself is a huge fan… how much might we be talking? Luckily, Diego knows me so well and answered that question himself using my own line. “Nicholas, this is a fantastic Pinot Grigio and if you get two bottles of this, it’s the same price as one bottle of Santa Margherita and way better. I laughed out loud on the phone… I’m gonna miss that guy!

This is a super elegant Meursault from the family-run estate located in the village of Monthelie, between Volnay and Meursault in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. It leads with nutty aromas of brioche, fresh butter and delicate citrus and is extremely well structured, long and stylish with great purity of fruit.
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
We’re nearing the end of what was a flawlessly crafted, high energy coastal Chardonnay release from one of California’s hottest spots. It’s still every bit as bright and refreshing as you could want and it hits with clean, pristine green apple fruits, pears and citrus notes with a hint of that limestone-influenced minerality. It’s a fantastic wine for all seasons, the perfect pair with mixed seafood, summer tomatoes, corn and freshly caught fish.
The newly released Riesling Feinherb 2021 is a lively, juicy wine with an elegant bouquet of minerals, wet stone and ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine’s slight off-dry component is beautifully balanced by the steely acidity typical of the Mosel. Because this is freshly released, the fruit is vibrant and succulent and it comes in somewhere between off-dry and semi-sweet. It’s a great example of Riesling, especially at the price.
