A husband and wife operation– Janet & John Trefethen have been at it in Oak Knoll since 1973 when they restored the original Trefethen winery first established in 1886. This wasn’t some fluke winery winning ‘Best in Show’. Trefethen is iconic in the Napa Valley as one of the largest estate wineries as well as the only wooden gravity-flow winery in the entire region.
The wines that come from this unique wooden gravity-flow winery are truly special. They’re full-bodied, fresh and incredibly expressive yet perfectly integrated and balanced, no doubt the result of a winemaking facility unlike any other and a team of winemakers that know exactly how to handle each vintage.
The 2017 Cabernet is a complete show-stopper, a dark and brooding Cabernet that manages to outshine and outpoint just about every other wine made in the vintage. Wild aromas of black cherry, plum, lavender and chocolate with smooth, lengthy tannins, great weight and a lot of personality.
“One of the compelling reasons for the ‘nesting’ of Napa’s AVAs is to prove just how different the Valley’s sub-districts can be, something that this wine from Oak Knoll makes admirably clear. The wine is a dark opaque black, but it’s soft, respiring resins and calmly ordered fruits alert the drinker from the aromatic profile alone that the wine has nothing monstrous or disproportionate about it. It’s ripe but supple and graceful, with as much juicy acidity as textured tannins: drinkable, accessible and fresh. The Napa hallmark of opulence is there in the succulent grain of the fruit, but in every other respect this is deft, finely judged midweight.” -Decanter Magazine

91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
90 Points, Wine Spectator
Domaine Jaume Vinsobres Altitude 420 is an old-vine Grenache-Syrah blend from vineyards planted in Les Collines at some of the highest points in the Rhône. The Jaumes have farmed these dizzying elevations at their estate in Vinsobres for 100+ years. The 2020 is one of his best yet, pristine and fresh, a bowl full of berried-up fruit yet with the tension and length that belies its humble price. Incredible bang for the buck, tailor-made for anyone’s house red, and a slam dunk for any kind of meat on the bone.
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
This one comes from very old vines in eight different lieux-dits, with the largest portion coming from Le Fourneau. Harvest is all by hand, and this wine sees 18 months in barrels with only 10% new oak. Clement (rightfully) believes that keeping the oak primarily neutral here brings out the most authentic and intense expression of his Pinot Noirs. Take a sip or two of this and you will know exactly what I mean.
