Te Mata is the oldest legal winery in New Zealand and since 1896 have been making wine off of these precious sites and they own some of the oldest in the game. This wine is drawn from two such estate vineyards.
The first is from the now renown Bridge Pa Triangle which kicked off a land grab in the mid 90s. The whites grown here are known for their consistent quality, delicacy, and intricate aromatics. The second vineyard is from the original plantings immediately surrounding the winery, in the Havelock Hills – some over 120 years old and known for the immense power they are capable of producing.
The balance of the two is outstanding and their estate bottlings have garnered just about the highest praise you can imagine. Jancis Robinson called the estate ‘a national treasure’ while Robert Parker simply deemed it “New Zealand’s greatest winery.” And Decanter called it “New Zealand’s first growth.”

Every year, Pierre Sparr’s Alsacian Riesling is one of the top scoring wines in the under $20 category. There’s a consistency there and consumers know they can count on a Riesling that is aromatic, fruity, elegant, clean and vibrant. Pierre Sparr wines are extremely food-friendly especially in the widely praised 2021 vintage where quality rose to an all-time high. It’s a bone-dry beauty with layers of citrus fruits, framed by wet stone and mineral character that adds dimension.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
The newly released Riesling Feinherb 2021 is a lively, juicy wine with an elegant bouquet of minerals, wet stone and ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine’s slight off-dry component is beautifully balanced by the steely acidity typical of the Mosel. Because this is freshly released, the fruit is vibrant and succulent and it comes in somewhere between off-dry and semi-sweet. It’s a great example of Riesling, especially at the price.
2022 was an absolutely perfect vintage in this respect and unfortunately, I think it will be one of the last, if not THE last. As winegrower Jean-Marc Brocard reported to Decanter: “When we taste the wines, we feel that the balance between acidity and ripeness is very good. It’s a classic style of Chablis. In the end, even after such a heat during summertime, we stay in a cool year reference.” He also alluded to the ageability of the vintage, saying “Let’s give them time, we must let nature do its work.”
