I like guys like Marco Bacci because he’s a hustler. The man who birthed the “Corbaia” label also was super smart to secure properties in the 3 best Tuscan appellations (Chianti, Montalcino and Morellino di Scansano). Antonio Galloni of Vinous has praised him countless times– saying that the Chianti Classico he makes at Castello di Bossi is “consistently amongst the very best”.
But I think it’s his wines at Renieri that represent the true jewel in his crown– with a terrific program in place to produce some of the most vibrant, well-structured Sangiovese in Montalcino and at prices that consumers can really dig into.
A lot of winemakers in Montalcino use the Sangiovese that didn’t make the cut in their Brunello for their Rossos but not Marco. When he bought Renieri, he had a specific plan in place to make the very best Rosso di Montalcino possible – by ripping out the existing vines and replacing them with new vines tailored to each site, focusing on clones specifically tailored to slightly shorter time in vat, prior to bottling.
Instead of making an inferior Brunello, he was making arguably the worlds best Rosso di Montalcino!
Aged 100% in stainless steel, the wine is wildly aromatic and energetic with a bouquet of roses, wildflowers and spices that accompany juicy cherry, orange rind and raspberry notes. It’s so smooth and well-structured with ultra fine tannin and a savory finish. It’s no wonder Suckling always includes Renieri in his Top Rosso di Montalcinos list amongst stars Caparzo and Argiano. It’s also why today’s brand new 2019 release comes accompanied by an over-the-top 92-point review.

At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.

Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
