The perfect marriage of wine and cuisine may actually be found in the tiny winegrowing region of Rías Baixas along the Spanish Galician coast. Basically isolated until the 90’s, miniscule family vineyards have been tended for generations with the sole purpose of pairing with the region’s inimitable seafood.
It’s here that – in the southernmost tip of the Rías Baixas – in tiny O Rosal – that we find Quinta de Couselo where they have been making wine since the estate was acquired by Cisterian Monks in 1163. O Rosal is perfectly situated – directly across Minho from Portugal in the Southeast – but still highly influenced by the temperate maritime conditions from the Atlantic Ocean to the west.
The newly released 2021 Albarino is phenomenal. It’s so vibrant right from the start; it’s beaming with energy. What Couselo does best is mix in the minerality, and the saline with a creamy mid-palate – notes of lemon meringue, pineapple, mango, and green melon with the Atlantic Ocean breeze helping to give this a beauty salty, tantalizing finish that leaves you begging for another sip.

This is electric, saline Albariño with a stony minerality that makes it both fantastic with anything from the sea but also just as good to start any meal as a mouth-watering apertif.

Great with anything from the sea. For lobster rolls, it just doesn’t get better!
It’s an electric white Burgundy, with a limestone-laced aromatic profile of green apple, pear and hazelnut. Refined and high-toned, the pure, delicious fruit that is a hallmark of this terrific vintage, finishes long and fresh, with a mile-long mineral streak.
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
Year in, year out Château Turcaud produces one of the best white wine values in the world. It’s long been found on Michelin-starred wine lists in Paris and we’ve had it at the restaurant since Day 1. If you’ve ever tried this stunning, classic Bordeaux of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Sauvignon Gris and Muscadelle, then you know why. The new 2022 vintage has arrived and it’s beaming with energy and pure stone fruits. This is a beauty as always.
