Today, Ponzi is excelling more than ever with Dick & Nancy’s daughter, Luisa at the helm. Famous wine writer, Hugh Johnson (Pocket Wine) mixed no words about Ponzi when he declared them, “a legendary producer now in 2nd generation making excellent wines.” With their superstar daughter, critics have never been kinder. Wine Enthusiast’s Paul Gregutt said of the 2nd generation superstar, “Luisa Ponzi… one of the brightest stars among the new generation in Oregon.” And of course the king himself, Robert Parker, Jr. couldn’t help to weigh in: “Ponzi Vineyards remains a reference point for American Pinot Noir with winemaker Luisa Ponzi at the top of her game.”
Since taking over from her pioneer parents, Luisa has racked up triple digit 90+ scores. So it’s no surprise that her 2nd ever bottling under the recently approved Laurelwood AVA label outpoints her double 93-point inaugural bottling, an absolute dazzler in the 2018 vintage that gave Oregon winemakers perfect conditions throughout the late summer into harvest.
From a northern ridge of Chehalem Mountains, this Pinot Noir shines with inviting notes of raspberry, wild strawberry and dried herbs. It’s a vibrant, supple wine that even boasts a little spice – a wonderful differentiator here. With 14 months in 20% new Oak, this wine comes out super refined and will continue to drink beautifully for the next decade plus.

94 Points, James Suckling
“Luscious aromas and flavors of blackberries, raspberries and strawberries. Medium to full body with round tannins and a savory finish. Spicy, with cardamon and clove, black licorice and sage. Sustainable.”

At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.
