Betsy O’Shaughnessy and her husband started with the most ideal spot in one of the most exclusive (and expensive) AVAs in all of Napa. Their vineyards sit perched high atop Howell Mountain at an elevation of 1,800 feet. Next – they hired superstar winemaker, Sean Capiaux (Jordan, Pine Ridge, and Peter Michael), to oversee the selection of the ideal clones for each and every parcel. Now with mature vineyards (over 20 years old), these wines are just beginning to achieve their true potential.
That doesn’t mean they haven’t received a bevy of over-the-top accolades. In the now 20 years O’Shaughnessy has sent their Howell Mt. Cabernet to Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, only once has their wine failed to receive at least a 93-pt score (the uber-challenging 2011 vintage).
In the near perfect 2016 vintage in Napa, Capiaux turned out an absolute beauty, easily worthy of the 96+ review from the Wine Advocate if not a few more points. Jeb Dunnuck, the Wine Advocate’s former editor and wine critic agreed. In his 97-point review of the wine, he called it, “Brilliant”, “Classy” and “Seamless” with “Fabulous concentration” and at a “Fabulous value”.

Excellent paired with a nice hunk of meat whether it be a steak, poultry or a briny pork-chop.
91 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Always the one with the most personality of the bunch, this is what Wine Enthusiast had to say about the 2021 release: “This extremely ripe and bold style of Pinot Noir will please those seeking such lushness. Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.
Not Eligible for Futher Discount-From famed winemaker, Robert Foley comes an absolute delight of a bottle of wine. A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. It is the definition of a Saturday Night bottle of wine. One to cherish for a special occasion.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
