The wait time for getting an allocation of Kosta Browne 4 Barrel Pinot Noir is 12 years. 12 years for 3 bottles of wine. Crazy– but I understand. Few wines made in America are more sought after than Kosta Browne; a winery that has a knack for making sexy, hedonistic Pinot that is almost impossible not to love at first sip. It’s also really hard to get– forget the 4 Barrel Pinot, I am talking about just their basic appellation wines.
I have 30 bottles of the newly released 2019 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir from Dan Kosta and Michael Browne– the product of what early indications looks to be a phenomenal vintage in northern California. It’s sourced from a blend of vineyards of varying exposures and soil compositions that all share the Pacific Ocean influence that follows the Russian River inland. This cooling fog keeps days and nights cool, allowing for long, slow development of aromas and flavors, crucial for making complex Pinot Noir. The 2019 is fantastic with aromas of freshly picked blue and red berries, with a touch of lavender and spice. It is super sleek and refined with bold and bright fruit and a vibrant acidity. It’s the type of class you expect from one of the best Pinot Noir producers in the world.

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.

Dark in the glass, it begins with black cherry, toasty caramel and cola milk shake aromas.” The cool, coastal days and abundance of sunshine lines up perfectly for a wine that has a good natural acidic backbone, with bold fruit-forward flavors. In an easy 2021 vintage, Joe Wagner had a field day with this single-vineyard beauty.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
