Rüdger van Wyk is the breakout winemaker at Stark-Condé in Stellenbosch. In addition to Jancis’ praise, he won South Africa’s prestigious “Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year” honor, and seen his wines at Stark-Conde featured in Wine Enthusiast’s ‘Top 100 Wines of the Year’ list.
But not so secretly, the joint venture he launched on the side with José Conde is what drives his passion– and the idea that the brand that he set out to provide, “great-quality at an amazing value” will become a worldwide hit propelling his brand, Kara-Tara into heights few South African producers ever reach on the international scale.
For so long, Oregon Pinots have in my opinion been dominating the new-world Pinot Noir scene, and making so many exciting wines. But with the wine economics in South Africa once again pushing product back to American shores, I’ve been blown away with the quality. Today’s Pinot Noir is a dead ringer for a $50 Oregon Pinot. It’s so fresh and fleshy with red and black fruits, currants, and a hint of bramble and sage on the finish. It’s pure, high-altitude, cool-climate Pinot Noir that will blow you away.

91 Points, Neil Martin – Vinous
The 2019 Pinot Noir Kara-Tara has a fresh, pure bouquet of wild strawberry and red cherry scents that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Quite compact and concentrated for a Pinot, but it retains delineation on the chalky-textured finish. This is a very commendable, quite delicious Pinot Noir.
90 Points, Tim Atkin, MW – Decanter
Kara-Tara is the personal project of Rüdger van Wyk, the brilliantly talented young winemaker at Stark-Condé. Made from a combination of Elgin, Durbanville and Hemelen-Aarde Ridge fruit, it’s an appealing, medium-weight Pinot Noir with redcurrant and pomegranate flavours and some texture and spice from 15% whole bunches.

90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
This one comes from very old vines in eight different lieux-dits, with the largest portion coming from Le Fourneau. Harvest is all by hand, and this wine sees 18 months in barrels with only 10% new oak. Clement (rightfully) believes that keeping the oak primarily neutral here brings out the most authentic and intense expression of his Pinot Noirs. Take a sip or two of this and you will know exactly what I mean.
Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.
As soon as you take the first sip on this one, you can easily see the Burgundian connection. Doglia’s Ruche di Castagnole Monferrato 2022 is medium bodied with scents of fresh cut lavender. On the palate, it’s an absolute delight, full of flavor but with an acid backbone that make it perfect to pair with almost any cuisine. Notes of wild fruits and a touch of pepper are just so good. This is a silky smooth, delicious bottle of wine.
