“[Hanh’s] lower priced [single-vineyard] wines consistently deliver serious bang for the buck and are among the best values in a region that, frankly, isn’t known for everyday wines.” -Josh Raynolds, Vinous
Swiss born husband and wife couple Nick and Gaby Hahn were looking for a special place to grow wine when they first moved to California in the late 1970s. They found a lush sprawling mountainous region that was largely unplanted with alluvial soils ideal for drainage and plenty of sunshine to develop fruit. Even better, it had enough fog and ocean breeze to keep acids in perfect harmony – so they took a leap of faith.
While it may have seemed risky due to there being virtually no one else with the same idea, Nick really believed in the area’s potential as a future world-class wine growing region and started investing heavily in land, a winery, and planting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
By 1980’s the grapes grown on the hillside vineyards would make the first vintage of Hahn. Shortly thereafter, Nick would also further his commitment to quality and the land by spearheading the efforts to make Santa Lucia Highlands its own AVA, defining the unique attributes and boundaries of the region. He was successful, of course and SLH is now home to some of the world’s best Chardonnay producers from Lucia, Landmark, Far Niente and Mer Soleil to dozens of others.

90 Points, Vinous
Pale yellow-gold. Mineral- and spice-accented citrus and orchard fruit aromas are complemented by floral and tarragon top notes. Penetrating Meyer lemon, pear and white peach flavors unfurl and take on a spicy ginger note with air. Finishes tight and long, with lingering mineral and spice notes and a late touch of vanilla. 30% new French oak
90 Points, Wine & Spirits
What starts off heady and rich becomes, with air, flavorful and fresh. This wine leads with a broad expression of apple blossom, delicate in the context of the rich flavors, then the finish is lifted and windswept.

If you’ve never heard of Bisci, let’s start here. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate called Giuseppe Bisci’s Verdicchio “one of the finest I’ve ever tasted,” and noted that “Verdicchio is one of the joys of Italian oenology that rarely gets the respect it deserves, and few producers do it better than Bisci.” A staple at $85/bottle for both French Laundry and Eleven Madison Park. “Verdicchio is one of the joys of Italian oenology that rarely gets the respect it deserves, and few producers do it better than Bisci.” – The Wine Advocate
Glistening pale yellow-green to the rim, infused with mouth-watering aromas of ripe apple, pear and quince, and crushed almonds with honey and rich creamy middle and a fantastic rush of acidity and minerality that are present throughout. A calling card of Bonhomme’s Vire-Clesse, if you closed your eyes and took a sip, it would have you convinced you were drinking Meursault at least a 3x price tag.

“The 2018 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard marks the beginning of winemaker Joe Nielsen’s tenure at the winery. Pouring a medium yellow with a light golden hue, it’s most reserved of the flight aromatically at the moment, with yellow chamomile flowers, ripe peach, beeswax, and white flowers. Full-bodied, it retains excellent tension and focus on the palate, with apricot, orange zest, and a savory finish with a bit of spice. I suspect this will come around and open with time. Drink 2024-2030.” -Jeb Dunnuck
The 2016 vintage in Napa was nearly perfect for winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val). With ideal weather all throughout harvest, he crafted the Faustini Money Road Chardonnay off the famous vineyard located in the coveted Oakville AVA. The picturesque vineyard off Oakville Crossroad is platinum rated, known for its ideal combination of soil & climate and the big A list names that routinely source fruit. Kian’s Money Road Chard is still youthful despite having a few years of age, probably as a result of its 18 months of slumber in 1/4 new Oak.
