As you might expect when a thirty dollar wine outclasses and nearly outpoints its next door neighbors in the region (Sassicaia and Ornellaia) at a fraction of the price – the sales board lit up like nothing we’ve seen before. Every bottle the importer brought in for the entire year for the entire country snuck out the door to the Nicholas faithful in two tiny emails (over 75 cases).
I have to give it up to the importer. This year the call wasn’t nearly so meek but they offered us first dibs. I accepted provided the Nicholas Faithful get it at last year’s price.
It’s hard to believe but the 2019 Grattamacco is even better than last year’s. This is probably a function of the vintage which was substantially hotter than most in recent memory and which strained all but the oldest vines until August rains came just in the knick of time.
Grattamacco is always a powerhouse with a youthful charm you can enjoy now but with the structure to age for a very long time. The 2019 takes it up a notch as the vines struggled, pulling water from deep within the earth and adding yet another level of complexity.
If you were one of the lucky ones last Spring, then you know what to do.

It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator

“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
