Frog’s Leap is a family-owned winery dedicated to sustainable principles and committed to producing wines with balance, restraint and respect for terroir. The winery makes its home amongst 200 acres of vineyards in Rutherford at the historic ‘Red Barn’. The famous winery is sometimes overshadowed by its direct neighbor, Caymus Vineyards.. but vintages like 2017 show why people might want to rethink their Cabernet priorities.
In an extremely hectic year in Napa Valley that saw fire damage wineries and ruin entire crops, Frog’s Leap was one of the lucky ones that came out the other end completely unscathed. Oddly enough, some folks including Antonio Galloni think that in the colder 2017 vintage, Frog’s Leap’s Rutherford Cabernet is even better than usual, maybe one of their best Rutherford Estate Cabs to date.
Wine critic, Antonio Galloni gushed, calling it, “such a gorgeous wine” and noting that despite their consistent excellent quality of Rutherford Cabernet, Frog’s Leap continues to be a “an under the radar gem in today’s Napa Valley.” With wines like their 2017 Estate Cab, it won’t be that way for long.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon is such a gorgeous wine. In 2017, the Frog’s Leap Cabernet has a bit more depth and richness, as it often does in warmer years. Cedar, tobacco, mint and sweet red cherry are all pushed forward in a succulent Cabernet with tons of character that still retains its super-classic, mid-weight feel. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s aromatic nuance and silkiness. The Frog’s Leap Cabernet remains an under the radar gem in today’s Napa Valley.

It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.
Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.
