For the longest time, The Perrin family has ruled the roost in the Southern Rhone Valley. For four generations now, dating back to their purchase of Chateau Beaucastel in 1909, it’s been the Perrin’s wines that others in the region hope to stack up against. And while their CDP sets the standard in the region, and their Homage bottling is often the single best bottle produced in many years (the 2018 is Decanter’s #1 wine in the region once again), the price tags are firmly set in the triple digits.
But tucked away amongst their Spanish Armada of Saturday nighters – is one of the absolute best values of the year. The Perrin Family’s ‘Les Cornuds’ from the commune of Vinsobres is always solid but as of late it’s been borderline spectacular.
In a difficult 2018 vintage, Decanter as well as a few other publications outlined the tough weather conditions that the Southern Rhone dealt with, but also noted that those who did it well, would get juicy and generous Reds.
Then they rated their five favorite wines of the vintage. Unsurprisingly, the #1 and the #4 spots went to the Perrin family and Chateau Beaucastel. With unrivalved winemaking experience and resources, the Perrin Family were able to create super intense wines, especially their ‘Les Cornuds’, an old-vine blend using the traditional mix of 50% Syrah, 50% Grenache that bursts out of the bottle with tension and energy.

The 2018 Vinsobres Les Cornuds is an even split of Syrah and Grenache that just screams Syrah in its blackberry, violets, ground pepper, and meaty aromas and flavors. Concentrated, medium to full-bodied, and balanced, it’s a terrific wine that’s going to keep for 7-8 years or more.
91 Points (Best Buy), Wine Spectator
Ripe and expressive, with a lovely beam of plum puree and violet racing through, laced with subtle mineral and anise hints along the way. Ends with a late whiff of dried garrigue on the finish. Drink now through 2026.

This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
