For decades, these guys were the top dogs until about the 1960’s when one of the members of the Lancon family started prioritizing quantity over quality. That’s when things took a downturn.
But in the 1980’s when brother Michel and Jean Lançon took over, that all changed and glory was restored in the following years. Their commitment to making improvements while preserving the traditions of the family have made all the difference, and their gigantic estate with a huge distinct advantage doesn’t hurt either.
As the Wine Advocate also notes, “they have 75 acres, with most of it situated in the widely renowned rocky plateau in the eastern part of the sector known as La Crau.” This area is one of the warmest, sunniest spots in the region and as such the grapes ripen sooner. That gives the brothers ample time to have the wine mature and develop bold, intricate flavors.
Farming organically and getting the most of their savvy old vines (many of them 50+ years old), these wines are gorgeous, deep wines with robust concentration and a myriad of flavors. This estate makes the perfect winter wines.
“Recently, spectacular wines have been created from their sensational old vine holdings throughout the appellation.” -Robert Parker, Jr.

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is a big winner, with the vintage’s purity and elegance front and center while still bringing beautiful depth of fruit and richness. Black cherries, savory garrigue, spice, and loamy earth all emerge on the nose, and it’s medium to full-bodied, pure, balanced, and straight-up seamless on the palate.

Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.

Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
