By far – the top selling Pinot Grigio in Nicholas Wines history is Diego Bolognani’s delectable example from high atop Trento overlooking the Dolomite Mountains. The Bolognani family is very unassuming, but have been quietly crafting some of the best Pinot Grigio in the world for almost 70 years now.
There’s really no close second to Diego’s wines in the region. But that’s not just me saying that. I’ve been on the phone with a handful of producers throughout Alto Adige and Trentino. When I tell them I’m looking for a replacement for Diego Bolognani, there’s been a consensus groan on the other end. Here’s what one of the producers told me: “A replacement for Diego Bolognani? That’s not possible. His Pinot Grigios carry immense weight in Italy; he is viewed as an icon.” Welp.
So it’s with a good deal of sadness that I have to report that Diego Bolognani has decided to retire. This wine life isn’t an easy one and the business will not be passing on to the next generation. So the 2020 Bolognani Pinot Grigio will be the last ever.

If I had to think of one wine to pair with a hot dog and the works it would probably be Diego Bolognani’s brilliant Pinot Grigio.
For years now, I’ve been absolutely delighted by the White Burgundies at Domaine Corsin. There’s really good reason for that. The Corsin’s holdings in Pouilly-Fuissé include many of the best situated sites in the appellation. This wine comes from a selection of older vines grown in these limestone soils. The current vintage is simply showing fantastic at the moment. The 2020 Corsin Domain’s Pouilly-Fuissé ‘Vieilles Vignes’ displays a bright golden hue with a hint of green. Its subtle bouquet with a woody-vanilla note enhances the slightly sharp, sophisticated fullness on the palate mingled with a generous underlying impression of toasted bread.
From just west of Sancerre, Vincent’s vines are tended organically in flint-laden, calcareous soil which lends a great brightness to the wine. The wine is crisp and aromatic Sauvignon, and is a superb choice for a “cocktail” wine, as an aperitif or to accompany just about anything from sea.
Year in, year out Château Turcaud produces one of the best white wine values in the world. It’s long been found on Michelin-starred wine lists in Paris and we’ve had it at the restaurant since Day 1. If you’ve ever tried this stunning, classic Bordeaux of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Sauvignon Gris and Muscadelle, then you know why. The new 2022 vintage has arrived and it’s beaming with energy and pure stone fruits. This is a beauty as always.
The Zenato family has built up quite the reputation for delivering exceptional value with their red and whites in Veneto. Their Pinot Grigio is a particularly great value, punching way above its weight class. Delicately scented and soft on the palate, it offers classic citrus and floral notes in a balanced elegant style. It’s smooth and refreshing with a long, pleasant finish. Great with food.
