Domaine Denis Carré, a 14HA estate with holdings in the HCB, Auxey, Meursault, and Pommard, was founded 45 years ago by Denis. Today, his kids Gaetane and Martial run the domaine. They joke that Denis is the best employee, retired “on paper” but still working like a bull.
We last met him when we went to check out the vines in Pommard in winter. He was mid-slope pruning on a day when at its warmest it was barely nudging freezing. A cold, wet wind coming across from Auxey made it feel like 30 below. He had been out there for six hours already that day yet oddly enough, his hand was warm when I shook it. These farmers are a different breed
Denis’ kids are an incredible team, Martial makes the wine and drives the tractor. He’s deliberate, quiet and thoughtful. His sister, Gaetane is the polar opposite, a bundle of energy whose infectious enthusiasm for hard work, organic farming and making fine, silky Burgundy had me ready to join Denis’s pruning crew in the vines. The wines are lights out; elegant, mineral whites and racy, tense reds.
This estate has been managed by Denis by 45 years, through some absolutely amazing vintages. However, ask the man himself and he will admit that the 2019’s right up there with the greatest he’s ever made. They are lights out. In a nearly perfect vintage that James Suckling referred to as “Burgundy’s Bullseye”, Carré’s 1er cru Beaune soars from the glass with notes of high toned pomegranate and cherry mingled with blood orange and rose petals. Medium bodied, the wine is velvety and layered, with great concentrated and multidimensional array of savory mixed with just amazing fruit.

“The 2020 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is truly sensational. It begins with striking aromas of fresh blackberries, blueberries and dark plums that are laced with fresh spring florals, mocha, sweet exotic spices, graphite and gravel nuances all taking shape. The palate is full-bodied and displays a remarkable combination of power and elegance throughout. This is beautifully structured and extremely expressive, as it possesses outstanding depth and concentration all they way through the long, finessed finish. Year after year, the Columbia Valley Cabernet is one of the most impressive wines, and there is no exception here, as it combines all the wonderful qualities of the 2020 vintage from Quilceda Creek into one expression. This is fantastic already and readers will be in for a real treat, as this simply marvelous wine will continue to deliver the goods for years to come.”
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
