#61 in Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2022
The name Damilano carries serious weight throughout all of Piedmont. They’re a food and winemaking institution. Not only are they known for being one of the oldest and most consistent wineries in Barolo dating back to the late 1800’s, but the family also owns and operates a Michelin-starred restaurant in La Morra.
Ever since Giacomo Damilano took over the family business in 1935, a revolution in the winery and the vines has resulted in the appropriate nickname ‘the jewel of the Langhe’. While their world-famous Barolo holdings have gotten most of the press, the critics could just not ignore their Monferrato Barbera d’Asti drawn from low hills mostly between 150 and 400 meters of altitude.
The 2020 Damilano Barbera d’Asti is a force to be reckoned with, a big, juicy wine with a pretty modest price tag. Utilizing fruit from an 11-hectare vineyard in Casorzo, with the average vine age of over 30 years, their Barbera is inky black to the rim with great depth and lots of purple and black fruited flavors.

91 Points, Wine Spectator (#61 Wine of the Year, Top 100 – 2022)
A rich and sumptuous red, evoking plum, blackberry and boysenberry flavors. Reveals accents of tobacco, almond and spice as this winds down. Lengthy aftertaste.
90 Points, James Suckling
Aromas of red tea, fig, plum and chicory root. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Succulent fruit with a tight finish.

“Needing plenty of air to show at its best, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is a sensational, gorgeous Napa Valley Cabernet that delivers the goods like only this region can. Pure Cabernet magic on the nose, with deep blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, lead pencil, and a kiss of spring flowers as well as a beautiful Pessac-Leognan-like scorched earth character, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, silky tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. It’s one of those wines that builds incrementally on the palate and it’s only after the second or third sip that you realize how special this wine is. It also offers that rare mix of power and elegance that’s the hallmark of all great wines. It needs a couple of hours in the decanter if drinking any time soon. Hats off to Paul Hobbs for an incredible Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.“
As soon as you take the first sip on this one, you can easily see the Burgundian connection. Doglia’s Ruche di Castagnole Monferrato 2022 is medium bodied with scents of fresh cut lavender. On the palate, it’s an absolute delight, full of flavor but with an acid backbone that make it perfect to pair with almost any cuisine. Notes of wild fruits and a touch of pepper are just so good. This is a silky smooth, delicious bottle of wine.
Winemaker Pascal Sirat consistently puts out some of the best value Bordeaux in the region but he may have outdone himself in what was a stellar 2019 vintage throughout the region. Just south of Pomerol, the vines at Panchille borrow deep in the soil. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price. Daniel Boulud tells me it’s been the hottest bottle of wine at Bar Boulud for over a month, so I figured I’d better hurry up and secure my allocation! Don’t miss it.
It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.
