Dave Phinney had a field day on this one making a blend from indigenous Italian varietals. He would settle on a native grape to Puglia and Nero D’Avola to add body and grippy tannins and Barbera from Alba for the lift and acidic backbone. The results since the first rendition have been both mesmerizing for consumers and maddening for locals. But now in the 8th iteration, the Locations ‘IT’ has become a firm fixture amongst the biggest and baddest under $25 Italian reds.
Across the board, Sergio’s wines enjoy an incredible vibrancy. They are big wines with such a streak of elegance, a quality rare in any part of the wine world. One wine which is perfect for the spring, is his 2021 Barbera d’Alba — a juicy, food-friendly number, that was fermented and aged in a steel tank so it is completely about the fruit. Without any oak, this one comes out zipped up, with clean, concentrated fruit – a medley of blackberry and black cherry fruit with floral notes and even some black licorice on the finish.
