The Piccoli family has owned vineyards in the Veneto since the year 1600. In addition to being known for their rich tradition of winemaking, but Proprietor, Gianni Piccoli is an important advocate in the community for the planting and growing of indigenous varietals, fighting back at those in the region that want to transition to the French varietals like Merlot and Chardonnay that they feel will be more marketable on a large scale.
Those of you who have bucked conventional Pinot Grigio in favor of Corte Gardoni’s Custoza Greoto know exactly how much better wine can get when it gets slightly outside the box. The Piccoli family has been farming for generations, and their dedication to the land shows. In addition to their 23 hectacres under vine, Gianni and his three sons sustainably farm grapes, apricots, peaches and kiwi on the shores of Lake Gardam, where old vines rooted in gravelly, porous soil, yield an aromatic, high-toned red blend of Corvina and Rodinella that combine for a juicy core of cherry, pomegranate and orange zest with a bust of vibrancy and minerality to boot on the finish.

#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator
92 Points, Wine Spectator – 91 Points, James Suckling
“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
