When we found Chateau Sipian, a jewel of an estate, just north of Saint Estephe and a couple of blocks off the D2, it could not have been a more pleasant surprise. The 2016 is the product of an absolute classic vintage, one Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate rates as a 97, the best since 2010. It is flat-out delicious, redolent of black cherries, violets and cedar with a concentrated core of cassis fruit and a mineral finish that goes way longer than any $25 bottle of wine should.

For $24, a Cabernet-based Left Banker, great tonight and every night for the next decade?….home run.
Grilled or roasted beef or lamb will be a great complement but the wine is versatile enough to work with roasted poultry or mushroom dishes.
Obviously, I can’t tell you all the details of the vineyard source but I can let you in on a few of the details. Crafted using fruit from 1000-1500 ft in elevation, Chad’s 2019 is cool climate Pinot at its best– especially given the price tag. While similar wines (very similar wines) will fetch a $45 price tag, you can snag it today just less than half off that price on bottle one. There’s no surprise this is the #1 wine of the year in 2020.
95 Points (Gold Medal), 2020 Decanter Wine World Awards
Well… I guess the cat is out of the bag on this one. Couldn’t keep it from Asimov at the New York Times or Decanter. Don’t let the price tag fool you. The 2019 Fabre-Montmayou Cabernet Franc is a gorgeous & serious wine that should be enjoyed like a Saturday nighter. Dark color and full throttle as you might expect out of the gate, giving way to pure fruit and a touch of that Cheval Blanc type jalapeno flavor that so intrigues lovers of world class Cab Franc.
The Mascot is a blend of Harlan, Bond and Promontory barrels, Cabernet Sauvignon from some of the most spectacular vineyards in the Napa Valley. It’s a bit steep, a Saturday nighter for sure. But when you consider Harlan Estate goes for about $1000 a bottle and Bond and Promontory come in around $500, the Mascot almost looks like a Tuesday nighter. Almost..
90-92 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s highest ever rated CDR 100% from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate was described as, “Rich, velvety and long”. All three adjectives accurately describe what Xavier Vignon believes might be his greatest vintage of winemaking yet. His 100% Cotes du Rhone offers the best value in his impressive arsenal, with big, juicy flavors flooding out of this one and making it the ideal wine to enjoy with most anything at the table or by itself so it can truly shine.
