Chateau Pavie is amongst a group of only a few original vineyards in Saint-Émilion that can trace their lineage back to the Romans. The chateau is certified Grands Crus Classés A, one of only four in all of Saint-Émilion with that honor (Ausone, Angelus and Cheval Blanc) and has developed a reputation over the years in the region as one of the estates that makes the most elegant of the Bordeaux blends.
Some of that immense success can probably be attributed to Michel Rolland, who for years has been firmed entrenched in the winemaking at Chateau Pavie. The man who is responsible for hiring him, Gérard Perse celebrated the 1998 vintage as his first since purchasing the property earlier that year.
The 1998 Chateau Pavie St. Emilion is a sophisticated treat, one that Robert Parker, Jr. himself called, “A 50 year wine” and one that boasts “a fabulous mid-palate and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute”. He gave it a 95 in 2001, but it later was bumped up to a 97 when tasted by his predecessor, Lisa Perrotti-Brown in May of 2018. She called it, “Big, rich and beautifully impactful” in her review and said the wine would continue to age wonderfully for another 25+ years! This one is just getting started!

97 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
The 1998 Pavie is deep garnet-brick in color. So much fruit comes charging out of the gate here: profound crème de cassis, baked blackberries and blackberry preserves with notions of beef dripping, crushed rocks, unsmoked cigar, sandalwood and dried lavender. Big, rich and beautifully impactful, it is completely packed with taut, muscular black and blue fruit preserves, maintaining nice firm grainy tannins with layer after layer of exotic spices, meat and earth notions, finishing epically long and minerally. Should easily continue to cellar for 25+ years.
96 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
The first vintage for Gérard Perse, the 1998 Pavie is drinking beautifully today and offers a layered, rich, yet seamless and elegant character. Blackcurrants, new leather, tobacco, chocolate, and dried flowers characteristics all emerge from this beauty and it has sweet tannins, a flamboyant, sexy texture, and no hard edges. It’s mature yet youthful and fresh, and unquestionably has another 15-20 years of life. (12/2018)

With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.

“The 2021 Malbec Reserva, from Vistalba, Lujan de Cuyo, was 60% aged in barrels for 12 months. Purple in color. The nose presents notes of fresh plum and violets, white pepper, strawberry, hints of spice and aromas from the aging process. It’s initially indulgent in the mouth, with good fat, and volume and a velvety texture. The flavors are bold and full-bodied. This 2021 overdelivers at the price.” -Vinous
It’s no surprise the Wine Advocate has called the Ventoux a “screaming bargain.” Carved off the left bank of the Rhone River, the 2020 Delas Ventoux is a gorgeous medium-bodied wine with wonderful crushed red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, tremendous structure and that signature Rhone spice on the finish. I haven’t had this wine available for a few vintages, but I figure it’s the perfect springtime Red to bring back in the fold!
