At Chateau Panchille, Pascal Sirat farms his family’s 11 hectare of Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines, rooted in gravelly soils laced with veins of iron-rich clay. He’s got fairly old vines whose roots run very deep in the poor soil, tapping the mineral groundwater far below the surface. The resulting wines are ripe but fresh, with an aromatic complexity and stony finish usually reserved for wine twice the price.
The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux was about playing the long game. It handsomely rewarded those who were patient in a vintage that looked completely doomed in the spring. It needed a perfect, hot, dry summer to salvage it — and that’s just what they got and then some.
With perfect conditions stretching on for weeks during the peak of harvest, winemakers didn’t have to all pick at once like they usually do. Instead, each could pick whenever they wanted– revealing a mix of approaches and stylistic takes.
Or with the truly great winemakers – like Pascal Sirat – multiple passes could be made picking each parcel, row, or sometimes even vine at the exact ideal time. Pascal usually hits a home run, but in 2019 he knocked it out of the park.
But with great winemakers like Pascal Sirat, the 2019 allowed them their own blank canvas, a chance to truly create the Bordeaux of their choosing, and most knocked it out of the park. The Panchille Bordeaux Superior is one of the best bargains of an outstanding vintage. Don’t miss it!

Not Eligible for Futher Discount-From famed winemaker, Robert Foley comes an absolute delight of a bottle of wine. A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. It is the definition of a Saturday Night bottle of wine. One to cherish for a special occasion.
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
The secret to Philippe’s tightly wound, complex Pinot Noir is a combo of ancient vines, natural farming techniques, and low yields. The wines are built to age, with incredible tension and length. And the secret to me securing his other-wordly 2017 old-vine Gevry-Chambertin can be chalked up to a great relationship and over a decade supporting superior Burgundian winemaking. The wine is scary good. The nose is wild, filled with spiced dark raspberries, red flowers, and baking spices. The palate is elegant and racy, with a dynamic tension that runs right through its minute-long finish. This is a high-toned, wound-up Pinot, that is starting to hit its prime and is really turning out to be a ‘must-have’ for true Burgundy lovers.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
