The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux is turning out to be a rare perfect storm for buyers, one that is absolutely shining at just the right time.
Of course if you asked most any winemaker in the region, they’d tell you that 2019 was always this good. Great in barrel, in bottle, and great right out of the gates. But some wine critics weren’t as sure in the opening stages.
Even James Suckling, who loves to stir a good pot stopped short of top shelf praise when he said “2019’s deliver some fantastic wines, but whether or not it’ll compete with the likes of 1982, 1990, 2009 and 2015 remains to be seen.”
Those of you who have been around as long as I have know that Jancis Robinson doesn’t mince words. And her reputation is rock solid, so she doesn’t need to make loud statements to garner clicks. That’s why when she said the following she grabbed the wine world’s attention:
“Bordeaux 2019 – best ever? No hyperbole here, believe it or not.”

The estate wine from this fine property is well structured and full of dark fruits and firm tannins. The balance is there, but the wine needs to age, to soften the texture and relax the alcohol. Drink the wine from 2024.

With seemingly infinite access to some of the absolute very best vineyards in the most choice AVAs in the valley, the Wagner’s set out to make Quilt– a Cabernet blend from a patchwork of the top sites in Napa (Oakville, St Helena, Atlas Peak, Coombsville, Calistoga, and Howell Mountain.) The brand new 2021 edition is a beauty – deeply concentrated, rich and a truly show stopping Cabernet. It’s a dark, hedonistic blend that combines elegance with power and pairs the two together effortlessly.
The secret to Philippe’s tightly wound, complex Pinot Noir is a combo of ancient vines, natural farming techniques, and low yields. The wines are built to age, with incredible tension and length. And the secret to me securing his other-wordly 2017 old-vine Gevry-Chambertin can be chalked up to a great relationship and over a decade supporting superior Burgundian winemaking. The wine is scary good. The nose is wild, filled with spiced dark raspberries, red flowers, and baking spices. The palate is elegant and racy, with a dynamic tension that runs right through its minute-long finish. This is a high-toned, wound-up Pinot, that is starting to hit its prime and is really turning out to be a ‘must-have’ for true Burgundy lovers.
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.

The new release is here from outstanding winemaking team of Michel Rolland, Charles Thomas, Andy Erickson and David Jelenik. This one always represents one of the best quality-to-price ratios in all of Napa Cab and in the stellar 2021 vintage, this really stands out as one of the best the Valley has to offer. It’s a racy mix of Coombsville fruit from Atlas Peak that absolutely roars out of the bottle. Always one of Napa’s great bargains and a must have even as the price starts to sneak up here a little bit.
