Many years ago, Melissa and I traveled to the south of France and fell in love with each other. That’s the important part of that story but a little side effect of that trip was the discovery of dry, Provençal rosé.
Of course, when we got back to the States and got up on our soapboxes to proclaim the wonder of this wine, all we got were crickets….our market was still stuck on white zin when it came to pink wine.
Of course, a lot has changed since the 90’s including the bucket loads of Gassier’s Esprit Rose that we’ve enjoyed vintage in and vintage out for just under twenty bucks a bottle.
But one wine we’ve never offered is the estate’s flagship rose. Why not? Because its best price is usually about thirty bucks a bottle and that just seems too high for Provincial rose even if it does have a glowing 92 point review from Vinous.
But today we have Gassier’s Pas du Moine Rose – the best price I could find online was $27.99, but today, ours beats that by a mile.

92 Points, Vinous
Brilliant salmon skin. Highly perfumed, mineral- accented aromas of fresh berries, citrus and pit fruits and a suave floral note. Silky and focused on the mouth, offering juicy nectarine, strawberry and blood orange flavors that show fine clarity and tension. Deepens on a very long, lively finish, that leaves a repeating floral note behind.
92 Points, Wine Enthusiast
This is a rich, raspberry-flavored wine, full of vibrant acidity and fruitiness. Freshness contrasts with the wine’s ripeness and generous structure. Drink from late 2020.

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”

Domaine Jaume Vinsobres Altitude 420 is an old-vine Grenache-Syrah blend from vineyards planted in Les Collines at some of the highest points in the Rhône. The Jaumes have farmed these dizzying elevations at their estate in Vinsobres for 100+ years. The 2020 is one of his best yet, pristine and fresh, a bowl full of berried-up fruit yet with the tension and length that belies its humble price. Incredible bang for the buck, tailor-made for anyone’s house red, and a slam dunk for any kind of meat on the bone.

“The 2019 Oublié is a blend of Syrah, Mourvèdre, Tannat and Petite Sirah with a medium ruby-purple color. The nose offers gregarious mixed berry preserves and accents of potpourri, mint and fragrant earth. The palate offers juicy appeal and powerful fruit with loads of spice and floral perfume, bursts of freshness and firm, pleasantly rustic tannins, finishing very long.” -Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

The winery made famous by Brad Pitt and Angelina is more famous in the wine world for their fleet of top Provencal Roses made by none other than superstar winemaker Marc Perrin, who has countless times turned the wine world on its head with his 100-point Chateauneuf du Papes at Chateau de Beaucastel. His 2022 Miraval Rose has a great salmon color with juicy notes of macerated cherries, strawberry currants, citrus and a lemon zest. It flashes that refreshing minerality that has become a Provence signature but crafted at 1100 ft above sea level, its crispness and vibrancy is unparalleled.
