Cerbaia is a tiny estate, just 12 acres. The vines were planted in the ‘70s on northeast facing parcels, rooted in the famous Montosoli calcareous soil. Elena Pellagrini’s time at the estate has just begun and in her second vintage, she has produced an elegant rendition of Brunello. The high elevation and mineral soil produce naturally tiny, thick skinned berries, perfect for making concentrated, structured wine yet with an aromatic complexity and finesse of tannin that usually reserved for wines at a much greater price. Elena’s 2014 Brunello is fragrant, redolent of purple flowers, sage and wild berries. The fruit is fresh, fine and long, with flavors of dried cherry tinged with anise and earth. The wine is dark and powerfully concentrated yet finishes fresh and kind stony, making it both fantastic at the table now and a great candidate for long aging.
Elena’s neighbors, Sassetti-Pertimali, Altesino and Valdicava start at $70 and quickly escalate from there. I have no doubt in time that Elena’s Cerbaia will be right there along side of them because it is absolutely just as good but for now, we’ve got a good deal to take advantage of. Don’t miss the new comer to the Brunello scene. She won’t be under the radar for very long…

This is a sensational single-vineyard Merlot made from incredibly tiny clusters, full of some of the most elegant, intensely structured fruit from high atop Sonoma Mountain. Beautiful weight and balance with aromas of blueberries, black currants, sage and a hint of cocoa. It’s got a full, plush mouthfeel, pristine and vibrant fruit and a wonderful smooth finish. Thanks to Chad’s big bet on himself, he was able to make a knockout Sonoma Mountain beauty, without the need for any middleman, helping us to enjoy one of his best creations at an outstanding price.
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
