I’ve had to be careful with my allocations from Volpaia. A few years ago, it seemed I always had enough to go around but after being named Wine of the Year & receiving the highest Wine Spectator rating ever for a Chianti (even outpointing the 2010 Castello di Ama with its’ $400+ price tag), I’ve tried every trick in the book to not sell out too quickly.
This year, I even took every bottle of the 2018 Chianti Classico that they would part with – but I’m sure it won’t be nearly enough. With 93 points from James Suckling and 92 point score and sweet review from Antonio Galloni’s Vinous at today’s great price point, I’m sure this won’t last long.
But unlike the last 50 bottles of 2017 Riserva that I could only send to two dozen people (it still sold out within the hour), this time I’m releasing the hounds. First come; first served.
The 2018 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico is an absolute stunner and is my early runner for Italian Wine of the Year. Drawn from high-elevation, organic vineyards – this one features complex aromas that one would expect from a wine three times the cost.

93 Points, James Suckling
A racy, fine-tuned Chianti Classico with blackberry, black-cherry and wet-earth aromas. Medium-bodied with medium polished tannins and a long finish. Transparent. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
92 Points- Antonio Galloni, Vinous
The 2018 Chianti Classico is a gorgeous, mid-weight wine that captures the essence of the estate’s high-altitude vineyards. Freshly cut flowers, sweet red berries, licorice, mint, pine and cedar are some of the many aromas and flavors that are woven throughout. The 2018 is gracious, inviting and impeccable in its balance.

Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
#24 Wine of the Year (2022), Wine Spectator
92 Points, Wine Spectator – 91 Points, James Suckling
“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”
The secret to Philippe’s tightly wound, complex Pinot Noir is a combo of ancient vines, natural farming techniques, and low yields. The wines are built to age, with incredible tension and length. And the secret to me securing his other-wordly 2017 old-vine Gevry-Chambertin can be chalked up to a great relationship and over a decade supporting superior Burgundian winemaking. The wine is scary good. The nose is wild, filled with spiced dark raspberries, red flowers, and baking spices. The palate is elegant and racy, with a dynamic tension that runs right through its minute-long finish. This is a high-toned, wound-up Pinot, that is starting to hit its prime and is really turning out to be a ‘must-have’ for true Burgundy lovers.
90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
