The Chianti Classico Riserva from Castello di Monsanto comes from a selection of grapes from vineyards which are more suitable for long maturing. The property is a beautiful one– perched high on a hill in Chianti, making some of the finest Sangiovese in the region. In the difficult 2014 vintage, Castello di Monsanto didn’t seem to get slowed down the same way as some of their neighbors. They were still able to craft a delicate, beautiful age-worthy wine.
The 2014 vintage shows a ruby red color tending towards garnet. Rich, intense and complex nose with notes of black cherry and spice. It’s full-bodied with rich red berry fruit flavors complimenting a backbone of tannin. $25 on bottle one with two 91-point scores in its back pocket.
We were only able to pry away seven cases. If you love a good Italian Chianti, don’t be one of the ones left out!

A seamless Bordeaux blend of 80% Cabernet, 17% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that is incredibly smoothly now but should have another decade easy of prime drinking. “Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
