We’re all pretty familiar with Cakebread at this point – especially their Chardonnay which is made in an unapologetically Californian style. It’s what has helped propel them in international stardom and restaurant fame. Its enormous tasting profile and overt brashness is part of what has catapulted the brand to international stardom and brought with it hundreds of thousands of Cakebread acolytes.
Of all the Cakebread of recent memory, the newly released 2019 Carneros is going to be darn near impossible to top. Conditions were near perfect in Carneros. Early rains replenished the soils, and then conditions evened out into perfect harmony. No heat spikes kept growth nice and even – and then at the end of the season, the grapes were able to just be allowed to continue hanging. This vintage brings out a cooler-climate, higher altitude personality to this bottling – and the extra acidity and tension suits it incredibly well.
The Carneros Reserve bottling cherry picks the family’s favorite lots to blend into a harmonious explosion – nearing a sensory overload. The nose is like sticking your face in a freshly baked peach/apple cobbler pie. Equally assertive flavors of melon, apples, and pears swim around the palate.

2022 was an absolutely perfect vintage in this respect and unfortunately, I think it will be one of the last, if not THE last. As winegrower Jean-Marc Brocard reported to Decanter: “When we taste the wines, we feel that the balance between acidity and ripeness is very good. It’s a classic style of Chablis. In the end, even after such a heat during summertime, we stay in a cool year reference.” He also alluded to the ageability of the vintage, saying “Let’s give them time, we must let nature do its work.”
Sonoma Coast is well-known as a cool-climate region, perfect for growing Chardonnay. That’s why it’s such a big deal for Route Stock to transition over for the first time from Carnernos over to here. The newly released 2022 beams freshness and comes packed with a delightful energy in its youth. It has a pale straw color with lime hues. The aromas are of honeysuckle, orange blossom and creme brulee with layers of vanilla and a hint of toffee. The palate is lively yet soft with flavors of lemon cream pie and merange.
The newly released Riesling Feinherb 2021 is a lively, juicy wine with an elegant bouquet of minerals, wet stone and ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine’s slight off-dry component is beautifully balanced by the steely acidity typical of the Mosel. Because this is freshly released, the fruit is vibrant and succulent and it comes in somewhere between off-dry and semi-sweet. It’s a great example of Riesling, especially at the price.
Just in time, we got back Vincent Ricard’s all-time great white wine bargain. This is a crisp, clean and flat out delicious Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. The protege to the Silex-style of Dagueneau – who over the last 15 years has produced flawless and beloved white wines that at last count were on the wine lists of over 36 Michelin-starred restaurants. This is a great house white and one that can surely hold its own with just about everything on the table.
