Villa Cafaggio has about 30 hectares under vine, all situated with hamlet of Greve, nestled in the ‘Conca d’Oro’ (Golden basin), an area recognised as the finest zone for producing Chianti Classico.
Robert Parker, Jr. called Cafaggio “An excellent estate – a Tuscan winery that has turned out a bevy of attractive wines.” But while the Chiantis are great, one wine stood out above the rest during my recent tasting.
Basilica del Cortaccio is an organic single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon that they refer to as a cru. Everything is handled as gently as possible here to bring out as much fresh fruit as humanly possible. The vineyard is hand harvested, pressing is manual, and barrels are all second year imparting a kiss of oak but not overpowering.

With certified organic fruit from Panzano in Chianti, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Basilica del Cortaccio reveals an inky dark color with ripe aromas of blackberry and black cherry. This is a full and generous wine that folds over the palate with ample richness and velvety softness.

In the 2020 vintage in Gevrey-Chambertin, yields were super low and temperatures were hotter than most Burgundian winemakers are accustomed. Many picked too late when the sugars were high and the fruit really ripe, but that was not the play. Still, Ann remained as cool in those hot temps as she did so many years ago in Napa, concentrating more on acid levels than sugars and picking at just the right time. This wine is absolutely singing – it’s an age-worthy beauty that should be even better in 4-7 years.

Damien has crafted a delicious Médoc, full of character with dense black currant and cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco and wonderful complexity. It’s silky complexion is what pushes it over the edge (and, of course, the price!) It doesn’t hurt that it comes from a 95-point Left Bank vintage that the Wine Advocate declared, “outstanding.”

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
It’s always nice to be in good standing with one of the most beloved wine brands in America! These won’t last long! This is an opulent, powerful dark-fruited Cabernet with tightly woven tannins, that is just raring and ready to go. Textbook, full-bodied, revved up and ready to go, this new Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet is the definition of a crowd pleaser.
