Cantina Boscarelli is a sprawling 45 acre property at an elevation of almost 1000 feet above sea level on the Cervignano hillside that has the advantage of their own microclimate. The soil is alluvial – sandy and stony with great drainage that allows for concentrated and elegant wines. Antonio Galloni calls them, “an excellent source for rich, textured wines.” He’s definitely not wrong.
The De Ferrari family are known for bringing the Vino Nobile category into the international spotlight – an honor that didn’t come overnight but instead after countless consecutive vintages of unmatched quality.
In the 2019 vintage, the De Ferrari family had little to do. A super even vintage made everybody’s job easier in the region, and Luca De Ferrari called it “a balanced year with no extraordinary excesses that needed to be compensated for.”

94 Points, Decanter
“The De Ferrari family make multiple passages to pick each bunch at optimal ripeness. Grapes for the Vino Nobile came in between 30 September and 7 October. It’s a plentiful, chewy, exuberant mouthful yet balanced and poised in its size. Wild forest berries harmonize with cedar and fresh earth nuances. The plump fruit is girdled by burly, ripe tannins and polished oak is in step with both. There’s a smoothness without any lack of intrigue, while racy acidity adds extra crunch.”
93 Points, James Suckling
“An understated Vino Nobile with discreet minerals, spiced plums, cumin and tarry savoriness that needs some time to pull together and open up further. Quite nicely chewy and tight, with a full-bodied palate and a clean, mineral finish. A little demanding now, but shows potential. Best after 2024”

90 Points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon’s brand spanking new CDR 100% is a thing of beauty. It’s already got a blessing from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate who described this wine as, “Full-bodied, concentrated and supple”. This is a gorgeous and intricate blend that features all of the Southern Rhone appellations. This year, the blend was 40% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 7% Cinsault, 7% Marselan, 6% Terret Noir. Nobody can do it like the mad scientist, Xavier Vignon.
This is Joe Wagner and Quilt’s inaugural Red blend called Threadcount. It is a total knockout at the price point for this style of wine. It’s a big voluptuous wine and very fruit forward. The nose is straight up dark chocolate dipped raspberries and it tastes of fresh-baked blueberry pie, spice, and a touch of toffee. It’s the kind of quality blend that you’ve come to expect from the family behind Caymus.
Anne Sery describes her Trousse Chemise Cabernets as an ode to the Left Bank and her winemaking roots. It’s a beautiful and fresh Cabernet with aromas that leap from the glass with of black raspberry, violets, and creme de liquor notes. The mouth gives generous amounts of juicy black fruits at the core with hints of baking spice and a smooth, savory finish. This is a terrific partner for just about anything from hard cheese, to poultry, summer salads, you name it!
Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
