In the last 30+ years, perhaps no other winery in California has had as much success with Rhone varietals as the great Randall Grahm. He would grow his tiny vineyard project into the 28th-largest winery in the country with pioneer brands such as Big House, Cardinal Zin, and Pacific Rim.
A man with that kind of passion and drive cannot be slowed down, so eventually he’d sell off his three biggest brands in the 2000s to focus on producing singular wines expressive of place. He also decided to dry-farm his legendary Estate Cigare vineyard, a move that would be risky for some, but for Grahm, it just further separates him from his peers.
Of course, as Grahm starts to dry-farm this vineyard, the concentration and flavors have only intensified. The latest batch of wines from him are the juiciest, most seductive I’ve tasted from Bonny Doon in the fifteen or so years I’ve been sampling these wines. Unsurprisingly, it has resulted in an increased demand as well as a plethora of big scores.

Crisp aromas of melon, peach and rose petal are doused in an engaging tinge of fresh lime on the nose of this bottling. The palate is very approachable with ripe peach and melon flavors that aren’t shy.

“The 50% Moscato Bianco, 50% Brachetto is one of the most distinctive sweet wines in all of Italy. Exotic floral and spice accents soar out of the glass. Rose petal, mint, sage, dried herbs and hard candy play off bright acids and an overall feeling of crystalline energy.” -Antonio Galloni

There’s a consistency to Pierre Sparr wines that consumers just know they can count on throughout the entire portfolio. The wines deliver aromatics, elegance, clean fruit and are packed with vibrancy. They also happen to be extremely food-friendly, especially in the past few vintages where yields were down but quality rose to an all-time high. This is a bone-dry beauty with layers of citrus fruits, framed by wet stone and mineral character that adds dimension.

What’s so special about this is the unique location, with its proximity to the cooling influence of the Monterey Bay, creates an optimal microclimate for grape growing. This cool maritime climate allows for a long, gentle growing season, resulting in grapes that ripen slowly and develop complex flavors while retaining refreshing acidity.
Fresh off its feature as one of Wine Spectator’s ‘Exciting California Values Under $25’, winemaker Matt Cline looks to stay hot with his release of the 2020 Contra Costa Zinfandel. This one is a beauty crafted off old-vines that are now between 110-140 years in age. There’s a ton of darker fruits that drive this one with a dusting of baking spice. The fruit is pure, fresh and long making it both delicious on its own or terrific with a burger, BBQ ribs, or grilled leg of lamb. Crazy cheap for what is in the bottle, load up!
