Backed by a very rich and very environmentally conscious investor, Avignonesi has been transformed from a centuries-old classic Tuscan winery into a re-invented, industry-leading, sustainable and biodynamic winery with organic wines and very minimal intervention taking place in an immaculate, state-of-the-art winemaking facility.
All in all, it’s one of the more impressive Italian estates. About 450 acres of vineyards fully certified organic and biodynamic. All wines are vegan and are made exclusively with grapes cultivated on the estate. A chef runs their own culinary program on-site, food and wine pairings, wine classes, the whole works. I mean they’re really dialed in. Melissa, if you’re reading this: I found our next move when the kids graduate.
Their SuperTuscan, Grifi (Griffin), is a particular highlight in an impressive portfolio. It’s a large reason, Antonio Galloni called Avignonesi, “one of the most respected names in Tuscany”. The ½ Cabernet, ½ Sangiovese blend is elegant and very tightly structured with silky Sangiovese tannins and a great acidic backbone from the Cabernet that give it lift as well as ageability. Coming off three straight years of at least 94-point scores, it has become the winery’s signature blend.

“The 2018 Palmer is a legend in the making…This audacious Palmer was still revving its engines 48 hours after opening. There will never be another Palmer like this, sui generis. It was a massive risk. But by throwing caution to the wind, something extraordinary was born.” -100 points, Vinous

The oft 100-point winemaker, Jayson Woodbridge had this to say when tasting his 2021 ‘Stargazing’ Sonoma Pinot: “The wine is vibrant and complex with subtle dark fruits and berries, grandmother’s cherry pie, minerals, and a slight touch of rain-soaked earth, intertwined with a balance and very pleasing easy-going luxury. Should have been priced higher but what the hell.” I have no doubt this clerical error will be addressed in the vintages moving forward. But for now, this is a cult Pinot for under $100/bottle.

“This supple red shows a core of cherry and plum fruit allied to olive, juniper and tobacco notes. Delivers well-integrated tannins and acidic structure, lingering nicely on the finish.”

“Vignon’s 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape delivers even more than I hoped for based on a previous sample. Hints of garrigue, roses, cherries and raspberries appear on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and long, with an intense, almost briny finish. The assemblage is 50% Grenache, 10% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, plus smaller proportions of seven other permitted varieties, while the élevage includes foudres, demi-muids, concrete and wooden tanks, plus terracotta amphorae.”
