In 2003, Anthony Filberti, David Low and Webster Marquez all met one another while working at Williams Selyem, the famed Sonoma winery best known for their world-class Pinot Noir. They said that watching one another scurrying to get everything done in the winery reminded them of worker ants, a name that stuck when the trio teamed up the following year to start their own small lot, biodynamic project. Five years after their inaugural vintage, the three worker ants received Food & Wine Magazine’s ‘Most Promising Winery’. A year later, the Wall Street Journal labeled them as “The Rock Stars of Pinot Noir.” All of this while the three guys were all in their 20’s and still all with full-time jobs at other wineries.
Influenced by the enchanted coastal breezes of the Petaluma Gap, the 2017 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir is both vibrant, passionate example of Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. It encompasses everything one looks for in Pinot: a floral bouquet followed up with bright red fruits, a hint of spice and a long and memorable finish. Due to the cool, coastal climate, the trio leave the grapes on the vine until mid-October, balancing ripe fruit with a gorgeous natural acidity. Don’t take my word for it though. Read the rave below Antonio Galloni of Vinous gave the wine along with his 92-point score. This is quintessential Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir at just $36/btl.

2017 Anthill Farms Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
The 2017 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a gorgeous wine that captures all the best of the Anthill Farms style. Pliant and generous, with tons of bright and saline energy, the 2017 is a wonderfully complete wine. Freshly cut flowers, chalk, mint and white pepper give the 2017 its striking freshness and nuance. This is such a pretty wine in its peer group. In a word: superb. -92 Points, Antonio Galloni Vinous

Winemaker Kian Tavakoli (Opus One, Clos du Val) continues to excel even while others struggle. In 2017, he still managed to deliver a beautiful and opulent Napa Valley Cabernet that’s both dark and juicy. The wine hails from both Coombsville and Rutherford, giving it distinct characteristics and a lot of drive. Deep ruby to the rim with excellent concentration, notes of Bing cherries, raspberry pie and hints of vanilla. On the palate, big wonderfully jammy fruit with young but impressive tannins and great length. The finish leaves notes of black cherry, and baked blueberry pie. Fantastic Napa value.
The newly released Fiancetto Howell Mt. Cabernet is a dream – a gorgeous, elegant dark-fruited Cabernet Sauvignon that is it picks up time in the glass, unfurls its full signature of cedar laced cassis nose and mid palate of chocolate-covered cherries and savory spices. Only four palates of this (224 cases) were made off a gorgeous, sprawling high elevation spot 1500 feet above sea level. It’s full and plush and finishes fresh and oh so long. The price is crazy for Howell Mountain Cabernet but that’s what Ry Richards and Fiancetto is all about.
The 2021 Napa Valley East side Cuvee is an instant classic. From the first whiff to the moment it hits the lips, its clear that this is a fabulously concentrated, serious wine: black in color, and featuring aromas of cassis, cedar and chocolate-tinged purple fruit. The mouthfeel is plush and voluptuous with a firm, solid finish that speaks to its potential for considerable aging.
At J Vineyards, Nicole is nothing short of a magician, making 30 different skus or more each vintage between her Pinots, Chardonnays, and Sparkling wines. For the vineyard’s flagship Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, up to 100 individual small lots are combined to make this great wine. Somehow, the blend is effortless–a quintessential RRV Pinot that has those soaring aromatics, bright red fruits, clove, and nutmeg spice with perfect balance.
