The sandy soil of north Piemonte is home to the appellation Roero and the indigenous variety, Arneis. Stefano Almondo is a master of the rare variety, crafting aromatic and mineral wines that rival any of the best white wines in Italy. Few in the northern corner of Italy create memorable white wines quite like the Almondo family.
The 2018 Almondo Arneis Vigne Sparse is an electric white wine, the perfect complement to briny seafood or my favorite, clam pizza. This is the base white wine at the domaine; many of you know the fantastic single vineyard Bricco delle Ciliegie. Vigne Sparse is a blend of parcels, from younger vines, meant for earlier and more casual drinking. The 2018 has soaring, high toned aromatics with juicy peachy fruit and a stony mineral freshness that makes it so good with any rich food.
It’s a great choice for a house white, flat out delicious by itself as an aperitif or a terrific complement to just about anything fried or from the sea. Almondo makes some of the best white wines in Italy; his Tuesday nighter Vigne Sparse is a perfect wine for the Indian summer outdoor dining, don’t miss it!

Pair this wine as you would with a steely white burgundy, with roasted chicken, delicate fish dishes, veal scallopine and of course, clam pizza!
Elena Walch’s newly released 2022 Pinot Bianco continues to be the best example of Pinot Blanc anywhere. She’s the undisputed queen. There’s so much energy in this new release. Super light in color, with a busy nose that boasts ripe aromas of citrus, granny smith apple with a hint of freshly mowed grass. Made entirely in stainless steel, the wine is expressive, fresh and finishes as clean and tight as can be. Definitely will continue the run of 90+ scores once this one is reviewed.
2022 was an absolutely perfect vintage in this respect and unfortunately, I think it will be one of the last, if not THE last. As winegrower Jean-Marc Brocard reported to Decanter: “When we taste the wines, we feel that the balance between acidity and ripeness is very good. It’s a classic style of Chablis. In the end, even after such a heat during summertime, we stay in a cool year reference.” He also alluded to the ageability of the vintage, saying “Let’s give them time, we must let nature do its work.”
It’s hard to beat a great value white wine and this one is a at least a cut above the rest. One prominant industry insider called the 2022 edition, “the best white wine by any within $20/cs of this price.” It’s super crisp with a great mineral streak, and was carefully picked by hand when the temperature is coolest and is kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing great finesse and freshness in every bottle. This white blend has great backbone and a lot of juicy fruit coming through behind aromas of flowers and stone fruits. At this price, it’s a no brainer.
The newly released Riesling Feinherb 2021 is a lively, juicy wine with an elegant bouquet of minerals, wet stone and ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine’s slight off-dry component is beautifully balanced by the steely acidity typical of the Mosel. Because this is freshly released, the fruit is vibrant and succulent and it comes in somewhere between off-dry and semi-sweet. It’s a great example of Riesling, especially at the price.
